I could rattle off a dozen or more essential Big Thief songs that didn’t make it into the Miami set list, but the show was so perfect I wouldn’t change a thing. “Shark Smile,” with its Springsteen chug-a-lug, began the mellowing, and by the time we had reached the glorious-and humorous-“Spud Infinity,” we were back at the hoedown, complete with a surprise solo on mouth harp from Lenker’s brother Noah. It segued beautifully into “Contact,” with its coda of death-metal screams primal enough to raise the dead, and then straight into the careening catharsis of “Not,” its ritualistic breakthrough. But it was the title track from “Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You” that underwent the most noticeable transformation, from delicate dream-poetry to up-tempo rocker, with some of the crunchiest guitar riffs of the night. “Simulation Swarm” seemed, to my ears anyway, slowed down from its familiar groove into a more loping, hypnotic beat that placed a greater emphasis on Lenker’s words. Those accustomed to the band’s studio choices were delightfully taken aback by these divergent live performances. Big Thief at Miami Beach Bandshell (photo by James Biagiotti)Įventually, Big Thief’s sonic palette expanded, as the set list took the shape of a rough bell curve: plaintive and rustic numbers building toward paroxysms of sound, then settling back into folkier pastures. As charismatic and intense as Lenker can be, I equally enjoyed watching drummer James Grivchenia’s Ringo joyfulness as he kept time, a giant grin on his face. Between this selection and the following “Blue Lightning” and “Certainty,” the effect was something of a hootenanny. This latter point was evident from the outset, when Big Thief opened not with one of its more-explosive numbers but with the quiet sing-along of “Dried Roses,” with guest musician Mat Davidson on fiddle and Max Oleartchick playing standup bass. (“It feels like we’re playing for an incoming spaceship … we’re the welcoming concert.”) It seems like, even after all these years of touring, Lenker is still not entirely comfortable with the between-song banter of her more polished peers, and I rather liked that about her: Her humility is infectious, and goes hand in hand with Big Thief’s disdain for ostentation-for the bombastic leanings and pandering phrases (“Make some noise, Miami!”) of Rock Concert 101. Lenker addressed the audience only sparingly, once to accept a portrait of the band painted by a fan once to request a groaning, food-related pun from the crowd while instruments were being tuned once to comment on the UFO-like design of the Bandshell’s architecture. This will be a band that will be appreciated long after “indie rock” has outworn its generic and cultural identifiers. The fact that I’m only considering eternal music legends when searching for Big Thief’s antecedents is a testament to their timelessness. Buttressed by the Bandshell’s excellent acoustics, Lenker’s lyrics were clearer than their studio recordings as a writer, her songs shift between directness and opacity in a way that can only be described as Dylanesque, while her band conjures the Grateful Dead at its simplest (that’s a compliment)-latching onto a spartan rhythm and carrying it to its natural, beautiful terminus. Big Thief’s songs could have sprouted from any era from the 1960s onward. Witnessing Big Thief on a beautiful beachfront night with a warm and enthusiastic audience of all ages, I was reminded of the genuine agelessness of the group’s music as well. Many songwriters aim for the soul, and bandleader Adrianne Lenker’s mesmerizing outfit nailed its target by song three. The song that accomplished this feat was the back-porch Americana of “Certainty,” and it wouldn’t be the last time I became unexpectedly emotional over the next 90 minutes-evidence that this concert’s pleasures were not fleeting, as many are. Three songs into Big Thief’s set last night at the Miami Beach Bandshell, my eyes were already misting at the edges. Additionally, collecting all the trinkets teleports you to the Secret Lab, which, according to the crew, contains research that will save the dimension. Luckily, it is also a case of Take Your Time, in that it won't happen while you're around. Although you do save all of your crew, you wind up screwing up the dimension you're stuck in, which will eventually cause it to collapse.Automatic Level: The player level Vertical Vehicle does not require any movement from the player there is only one button press in this level, and that's to collect a trinket.Auto-Scrolling Level: The Tower, The Panic Room and The Final Challenge. Are We There Yet?: Vermilion asks this at one point if taken to the the first intermission level. For sake of simplicity, this article refers to him as male. Ambiguous Gender: Captain Viridian's gender is never revealed throughout the game.A better example might be the game's soundtrack "PPPPPP", which has its own pattern: each song name starts with, of course, P. Every crewmember's name starts with "V", as do a few level names ("Veni", "Vidi" and "Vici" come to mind). Note that this applies to both the top and bottom, so there's an Advancing Wall of Doom.
Most users should check it out first, unless you know for sure that you need some other specific features.Īirmail takes the basic premise of an email client like Apple Mail and builds on it with more modern features and an emphasis on speed. This is a solid email client, and you already have it. Handoff with iOS allows you to seamlessly pick up where you left off on your mobile device, and Mail Drop uploads large attachments to iCloud for easier sharing. There are plenty of other bells and whistles too. You can then quickly access your filters via the sidebar beneath the Smart Mailboxes heading. Head to Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox to define the criteria by which you want to filter your messages (e.g., unread messages, mail with attachments, mail from a specific person, messages you never responded to, or some combination of all of the above). One standout feature is the inclusion of smart mailboxes that filter your mail based on rules of your choosing. Unified mailboxes let you see all of your incoming, sent, and draft mail in a single list by default, or you can pick specific mailboxes if you prefer. Messages are presented as threaded conversations that are separated by subject. The user interface is clean, with mailboxes, folders, and accounts accessed via the sidebar. It also allows you to connect your own IMAP and POP3 accounts, with S/MIME support for end-to-end encryption. It's a basic email client with support for a range of services, including the company's own iCloud Mail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Exchange, and AOL Mail. If you've ignored this one for a while, it might be time to look again.Īpple Mail is quick to set up. The app got a visual overhaul a year or two back and feels a lot more modern because of it. With that in mind, here are the best Mac email apps.Īpple Mail is already on your Mac-that in itself makes it a solid default choice and the option to beat. Which is better? That's up to you to decide. Some free apps were almost as good as the most expensive options for most things-but if you want, say, the most advanced customization options, then you'd have to pay. No single app ticked all the boxes, at least not in the same ways. For the more advanced options, I dug through the settings and preferences and played around with things to see how they were to use. In the past decade, I've picked up an absurd amount of experience with email apps, so it was often clear pretty quickly which were great options and which ones had the potential to make the email experience even worse (yes, it's possible).Īny apps that passed the initial sniff test I then used for a few days for normal email-y things. In practice, this meant logging in with one of my (sadly, many) email addresses and using it. I tested any mail client for Mac that seemed like it met most of these criteria. There are simple tweaks, like being able to snooze emails so they reappear in your inbox later or built-in reminders to follow up with someone you haven't replied to, that make using an email app just, well, nicer. While this wasn't strictly required, some kind of email automation, filtering, and customization was considered a big plus. One of the advantages of having a dedicated email app is that you get access to more advanced features and integrations with other apps. For Mac apps, this means they have to run natively, take advantage of macOS-specific features like the menubar and notifications, and respect things like default keyboard shortcuts.Īdvanced features and integrations. If you're going to use an actual app, it had better be nice. The Gmail and Outlook web apps aren't dire. I was looking for apps that supported major services, like Gmail and Office 365, as well as the IMAP and POP3 protocols so you could use most other options.Ī great user experience. Email apps should, where possible, be service agnostic. Apps that just added Gmail notifications to your menu bar and other similar features weren't included. You need to be able to read, write, search, and sort your mail. To put together this list, I reviewed dozens of Mac email clients (and skinned web apps purporting to be Mac email clients). For more details on our process, read the full rundown of how we select apps to feature on the Zapier blog. We're never paid for placement in our articles from any app or for links to any site-we value the trust readers put in us to offer authentic evaluations of the categories and apps we review. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as it's intended to be used and evaluating it against the criteria we set for the category. All of our best apps roundups are written by humans who've spent much of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. The problems is, any of the changes you made in Scrivener will not be saved back into your nvALT notes. Importing: importing the notes saved in nvALT into scrivener. After collecting your short notes for a long time into nvALT, now, it is time to use them in your writing. Never did I think that one text editor could go such long ways in being a pit stop for pretty much all of my writing that I do on all of my devices.NvALT is one great fast note writing app. If you remotely love markdown, you are a blogger, and on top of that Evernote aficionado, then this is the big step forward in integrating 3 different needs in one app. It became one stop shop for all my writing needs (and those grow by the day). Even without the premium, this app has been a superb text editor, but with these bonus functionalities, it has gone even further than I could imagine. Final thoughtsīyword premium is a new feature, it is in its first iteration, and so far it is very promising. Will it be Tumblr, Evernote, Personal blog, or AlphaEfficiency, I have that choice at the click of a button. Evernote integration made it my number one working area, as whatever I create, I can choose the final destination of my work. Not all of my writing will turn out to be a superior blog post, yet sometimes I want to save it as my diary entry. Evernote integrationĪs you know, Darren and I’ve been playing around with Evernote a lot lately, and for both of us, Evernote serves as a long-term memory. The fact that it supports both iCloud and Dropbox sync, makes it perfect for splitting blog work from private stuff. The fact I won’t be using it for the production doesn’t mean that I won’t be using it for publishing, where it is superb as it is. All that needs to be done is hitting “publish”.Īs much as I hate Byword on iPhone for writing on it (I write in WriteRoom, because of full-screen capabilities), Byword has managed to push a big part of the publishing process away from Poster app (which is unfortunately not sold anymore), to itself. Once we sort that out, we’re pretty much good to go. Usually, we leave the article for another guy to edit it, and add his own thoughts and potentially links. Both of us access the same folder through Byword, and from that point on, we’re one click away from publishing. How Darren and I do it the Alpha Collaboration style?ĭarren and I share the Dropbox folder, where we shoot up all the things we write. Because now, it happens in the same location. It is something that is as easy as writing itself. And publishing is honestly not a chore anymore. It is something that ultimately changed my view on writing. And for all old faithful Byword fans, who are also blogging, this additional feature is going to be mind-blowing. Publishing is slowly becoming a new norm. I’ve sent the blog post as a draft initially, but then I moved on and scheduled a post. I was tipping the toes slowly, so I’ve added AlphaEfficiency as well. How I saw it on preview, that’s how it looked like on the blog itself. The formatting and editing were “just right”. I’ve done it a couple of times for my personal blog, but then I’ve seen how seamless and well it worked. So I decided to go with the iOS version and started using the iPad as a main posting tool. But then all of that changed…įor a while, I resisted getting Byword premium, as it was 5$ for both OS X and iOS version, and I thought it was too much. Fining a blog post was a workflow that required 3 apps per post on average. Usually, it would start in nvALT, I would edit in Byword, for the Markdown preview and fine-tuning, and ultimately post it through MarsEdit or through WordPress dashboard. And my blogging process was on that note completely separated. My favorite Mac writing applications were switching between nvALT and Byword, and somehow I wanted to store all of my written data in Evernote. One of the silent shifts, that I didn’t mention much on this blog, was a transition from various writing apps to a single one: Byword. To access OS X Recovery, reboot the computer while holding the Option key. When the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant completes, the new partition will not be visible in the Finder or Disk Utility. On the parallels between her experience and Piranesi's I very much wanted to write another big book, but I didn't feel that was a very sensible place to start. But the pressure of all the years when I hadn't written, and all the stories I hadn't written, weighed very heavily on me. But I got to a point where I felt I could write. So at some points during my illness, I suffered very badly with cognitive impairment, with what they call brain fog. The pressure of all the years when I hadn't written, and all the stories I hadn't written, weighed very heavily on me. The statues and the house all feel generally overwhelmingly benevolent to him and he feels like he is in communion with them, like he is sort of almost having a conversation with the world in which he finds himself." "He's in a very strange and in some ways inhospitable place, but he doesn't feel it's inhospitable," Clarke explains. He catches fish in the oceans that roar through rooms down below. The fictional Piranesi explores the massive halls lined with towering statues. They're meant to be gloomy, but I find them quite attractive." I must admit, I kind of want to go to those fantastic prisons. "They could possibly be real places, but quite dark and looming. "He did some engravings of fantastic prisons which have haunted my imagination for a long time," Clarke says. His name comes from a real-life person, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, an 18th-century architect and artist. Her latest is called Piranesi - that's also her narrator's name - and his whole world is a strange, labyrinthine house. Now, 16 years later, Clarke is focused on feeling locked in. That blockbuster book was all about escape. Susanna Clarke's debut novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, was a sweeping page turner about ancient magic set during the Napoleonic Wars. |
